The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Food Safety and Security Program is seeking a Manufactured Foods Specialist/Auditor for th! e Richmond area and surrounding counties. The successful candidate will be responsible for the following: enforcement of the Virginia Food Laws and related regulations in manufactured food establishments by conducting both food safety and food security related inspections; collecting official samples of food and food related products; investigating consumer complaints; training and auditing field staff through performance based inspections and working cooperatively with the Food Safety and Security Program management staff to coordinate and implement special projects and programs for the Manufactured Food Inspection Program.
This is a restricted position that has been developed as part of a Cooperative Agreement with the Food and Drug Administration that is slated to last until June 30, 2015.
Minimum Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess significant knowledge of food safety practices and principles; knowledge of complex food processing a! nd food handling procedures of food establishments; extensive ! knowledge of all applicable state and federal laws and regulations related to food protection; and knowledge of the regulatory inspection process, product labeling, food processing, food microbiology & Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) concepts. Proficiency using standard professional computer software applications. Must have the ability to interpret and apply laws and regulations; to compose relevant standard operating procedures, policy guidelines and other documents; to perform technical science based research relative to food, dietary supplement and regulatory related issues and make independent technical decisions; to work both independently and in a team environment; to effectively communicate, both written and orally; to be self motivated; and to effectively plan and organize work activities and successfully interact with the food safety staff, the public, the food industry and other regulatory agencies. A valid Virginia Drivers License is required.!
Preferred Qualifications
Degree in Food Science, Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Environmental Science or a related field. Current or recent experience in a similar regulatory position dealing with food safety and security in a retail environment. An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
Special Requirements
Final candidate must successfully complete a fingerprint-based criminal background check. In accordance with the Code of Virginia, incumbents of this position must complete a Statement of Economic Interests form upon hire and annually thereafter.
