The news editor is in charge of producing the editorial content of Style Weekly for the news and features sections. The news editor and arts editor have parallel roles in the editorial department, although the news editor serves! as editor in his or her absence.
Essential Functions :
The news editor supports and fulfills the vision as set forth by the editor. He or she serves as the team leader and coach for the News & Features team, as well as the copy desk. Among other things, the news editor:
Is responsible for the news and features content for Style Weekly, working with reporters and freelancers to produce smart, witty and tenacious coverage of the Richmond area. This includes the Street Talk and News & Features section, along with related cover stories.
Writes editorial content as necessary, including at least one cover story per quarter.
Oversees news-related signature issues, and others as necessary, including The Power Issue.
Manages the freelance budget for his or her section.
Helps the editor respond to readers regarding content issues in his or her section.
Works with the creative director to coordinate art for the! section and determine how stories are played.
Manage! s the Back Page essay section.
Helps coordinate entries for the Virginia Press Association and other editorial awards competitions.
Required Skills
Basic Qualifications:
Experience contributing in a team environment.
Ability to work well under pressure to meet deadlines.
Know AP style.
Be proficient in the nuances of the English language.
Assist in writing headlines, cutlines and other copy as necessary.
Preferred Qualifications :
Experience with online media.
Knowledge of the Richmond area.
Required Experience
Education /Experience:
College degree or equivalent.
At least one year of experience in print media.
