Duties: The Phys! ician Assistant (Urology) is assigned to Surgical Service at the VAMC in Richmond, Virginia and provides medical and surgical care for both inpatients and outpatients in the Urologic Section. The Physician Assistant is responsible for the evaluation of current medical and surgical problems, administrative assistance, quality assurance and educational support. Providers with prior urologic experience will be given priority consideration. Duties include:
Depending on qualifications, role may include cystoscopy andy prostate biopsy under supervision.
Evaluates and develops treatment/management plans for a wide variety of Urologic disorders in the outpatient consult and follow up clinic. Conditions may include: Urologic Oncology (prostate, kidney, bladder cancer), voiding dysfunction, incontinence, hematuria, erectile dysfunction and stone disease.
Promotes patient care programs for the Department of Urology and periodically update them based upon current and n! ew concepts, research as well as findings of the attending physician.
Integrates the activities of the Urology service with other patient care programs at the facility.
Evaluates Urologic Consults and determines the appropriate disposition, routing and priority of those consults.
Facilitates access to the Urologic team for other Health Care Providers.
Participates in quality assurance program with a multi-disciplinary group-developing criterion for administrative goals in the section.
Individual may function as non-physician coordinator for select Urology clinics as deemed appropriate by the Chief of Urology.
Serves as a resource for the surgical service nursing staff, medical students and residents regarding patient care in the Outpatient Urology Clinics.
May serve as sub investigator and clinical coordinator for clinical research trials.
Salary: Commensurate with experience and education/determined by Physician Assistant Profess! ional Standards Board.
Work schedule: Monday- Friday 7:! 30 AM - 4:00 PM

BASIC REQUIREMENTS :
Education/Training -
A bachelor's degree from a Physician Assistant training program which is certified by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education of the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA); OR,
Graduation from a Physician Assistant training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a bachelor's degree in a health care occupation or a health-related science; OR,
Graduation from a Physician Assistant training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a period of progressively responsible health care experience such as an independent duty medical corpsman, licensed practical nurse, reg! istered nurse, medical technologist, or medical technician. The duration of approved academic training and health care experience must total at least 5 years.
CERTIFICATION: As of March 12, 1993, certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician's Assistants (NCCPA) is a requirement for employment. This requirement does not apply to non-certified Physician Assistants on VA rolls as of that date.
